Environmental Issues
On this page, you will learn about some serious environmental issues going on in Southeast Asia. Take a look below to learn about them.
YANGTZE RIVER POLLUTION
The Yangtze River is facing major issues involving pollution. Make sure you are not planning on swimming in the river anytime soon because of the factories that pump raw sewage into the river. Another cause of the pollution in the Yangtze River is waste from passing ships. If you ever see a ship passing by, it might be disposing of sewage. Waste would be disposed from ships and would fill the river with even more pollution. And another big one is dams. Dams block and slow the water flow in a river which blocks the pollution from flowing out. And in the end, the effect of this pollution is the costs. Everybody over there is trying to reduce the numbers by a lot, which results in fees and costs. And the pollution is also driving out animals from their habitats, reduced the population of fish, and endangered some species like the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Baiji dolphin. |
GANGES RIVER POLLUTION
The Ganges River is a very sacred river and stretches to about 1600 miles long. And the crazy thing is that the Ganges supports around 500 million people survive in the world but there also comes a little bit of pollution that you should be aware of. And if you do try and drink or swim in the sacred water, just know that you are most definitely swimming, or possibly drinking, raw sewage. Over 220 million gallons of raw sewage are being dumped into the river on a daily basis. And about 1000 industries are also disposing trash and other pollutants into the river too. It has been labeled as the most polluted river in the world and some effects to all of this pollution is a whole lot of sicknesses and illnesses. Some of these illnesses are hepatitis , typhoid, cholera, and amoebic dysentery. And studies show that about 1/3 of the deaths in India are due to the heavy pollution of the river. So I suggest not bothering to take a dip in that river. |
AIR POLLUTION AND FLOODING : INDIA
India is a very beautiful country and with about 1.4 billion but sadly is one of the most polluted countries in the world (air pollution) and it continues to worsen. Some major reasons that India is so bad are from farmers, cars, and industrial factories. Farmers are to blame for a lot of the damage to the air because after harvesting crops, farmers burn their fields, saying that it is the fastest and most efficient way to clear the fields for planting. And the cars are also to blame because of the amount of people that use cars to travel. This releases carbon emissions into the air which contributes to the amount of pollution in the air. But the industrial factories are terrible compared to the cars and farmers. At least 50% of the air pollution is caused by the industrial emissions. And the effects are even worse. Over 1 million people in India have died to air pollution alone. Along with the deaths, millions of people have damaged their lungs or infected their throats from the heavy pollution in India. This means that you might want to bring a mask with you for a little extra protection against the smog. And with the pollution, there has also been some flooding along side it. This was because of very heavy rains and ultimately damaged the surrounding area. |
Along with the paragraph above, you can watch the video to learn a little more about the pollution in India. This video just goes more into depth.
AIR POLLUTION AND FLOODING : CHINA
In China, there has been a lot of flooding. And the reason for this is very intense rain going on in China. This has been going on since early June and has damaged a lot of homes and places. Recently, the floods have left over 4000 people dead, and over 14 million homeless. And that's not all. There has also been air pollution everywhere in China. Back in November, over 100 cities failed to meet the air quality standards and what is to blame is the factories, coal-fired power plants, and other industrial factories. The pollution has gotten so bad that, like in India, airports have sometimes shut down or delayed flights due to the poor visibility in the air. Pollution has also led to higher death rates due to respiratory issues. |
